The most football league goals scored in a single national top division season is 67 and was achieved by Archibald Stark (United Kingdom) playing for Bethlehem Steel in the American Soccer League, from 15 September 1924 to 18 May 1925.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1897 the centre forward Archibald Stark started out with the Kearny Scots-Americans and continued to play football until WWI interrupted his career, he served in the US Army. By 1921 he was playing in the professional ASL (American Soccer League) with New York Football Club before being sold to Bethlehem Steel for the 1924-25 season where he set this record scoring 67 times in 44 games. On his league debut he netted four against Philadelphia in a 7-1 win and would score five versus the same opponents in his final league game of the season. Despite his prolific goalscoring efforts Bethlehem Steel finished second that year. Archie Stark ended his career with 300 goals. The closest person to beating Stark's record was the Hungarian Ferenc Deák who managed 66 league goals in a scintillating season for Szentlorinci in 1945/46.
