The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, has a seating capacity of 110,000. The state-of-the-art venue’s first cricket match was a pink-ball day/night Test between India and England that started on 24 February 2021, although owing to COVID-19 restrictions there were only 55,000 fans in attendance – just 1,000 more than the seating capacity of the old Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium (aka Motera Stadium, 1983-2015) that used to occupy the site, which was completely demolished before the new stadium was built. Named after the Indian Prime Minister (2014-present), the Narendra Modi Stadium occupies 63 acres (25.5 hectares) of land and boasts 11 cricket strips, four changing rooms, 76 corporate boxes and LED lighting instead of traditional floodlights. The stadium and its facilities had a reported construction cost of 8 billion rupees ($110.3 million; £78.3 million).
Australia’s Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) was previously the highest-capacity cricket ground in the world at 100,024, followed by Kolkata’s Eden Gardens (68,000), also in India. Only the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, has a larger capacity than the Narendra Modi Stadium: officially 150,000 when it was opened in 1989, but approximately 114,000 after its renovation in 2014.
