The moth with the greatest wingspan is a specimen of white witch or great owlet moth (Thysania agrippina), native to South America, Central America and Mexico. The wingspan for this species is generally up to 28 cm (11 in), but one exceptional individual, an adult female collected in Brazil in 1934, sported a wingspan of 30.8 cm (1 ft 1 in). This record-breaking specimen is housed in the collection of John G. Powers in Ontario, Canada.

This is one of several species of owlet moth, which derive their name from the large eye-like spots on their wings, which, when suddenly flashed at a potential predator, make the moth superficially resemble an owl's face, thereby startling the predator and, hopefully, preventing the moth from being attacked.
