Ranidae, the taxonomic family containing the ranids or true frogs, has the widest distribution of any frog family. Collectively, its member species occur on every land continent except for Antarctica, plus various islands.
Most of this family's species live near to water or are aquatic (there are even a few brackish species). They include some of the world's best-known frogs, such as the goliath frog, the edible frog, the pond frogs, the bullfrogs, the grass frogs, and the torrent frogs.
