With total worldwide box office takings of $2,058,662,225 (£1,541,230,000) according to The.Numbers.com, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (USA, 2015) is the highest grossing film in the Star Wars franchise to date, and is currently the overall third-highest-grossing movie of all-time.

There are now eight Star Wars films – the seven episodes released so far and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. A further four films are currently planned – episodes VII and IX, plus two more non-episode stories.

Adjusted for 2017 inflation, the highest-grossing instalment in the Star Wars franchise to date remains the first film, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), with an estimated adjusted worldwide gross of $2.776 billion (£2.271 billion).

Selling an estimated 338 million cinema tickets across the world, A New Hope remains one of the most profitable and widely seen movies of all time.
