As verified on 27 February 2008 by Twin Galaxies, Rodrigo Lopes (Brazil) achieved arcade history’s highest videogame score while playing on Giga Wing 2 – a conversion of an arcade shooter for the Sega Dreamcast. On Stage 7 of the Score Attack mode, he amassed 13,617,120,714,066,509,824 points. In contrast, the world record on Cinematronic’s Space Wars, created in 1977, was only 19 points – a record that still stands today.
This score is beaten only by the 23,418,862,404,272,676,864 achieved by Tom Duncan in the Atari 2600 videogame Garfield. However, Garfield was a cancelled platform game and presented far less gameplay challenge than the frenetic shooter that was Giga Wing 2.
