When Kevin Anderson (South Africa; 6 ft 8 in or 2.03 m) met Sam Querrey (USA; 6 ft 6 in or 1.98 m) in the 2017 US Open quarter-finals on 5 September, it was the tallest quarter-final, semi-final or final in Grand Slam history. Anderson, seeded 28, won the battle of the combined 13-ft 2-in (4.01-m) giants, coming through 7–6, 6–7, 6–3, 7–6.

Juan Martín Del Potro, who won the US Open in 2009, is the tallest Grand Slam champion, at 6 ft 6 in.

Anderson defeated Spain's Pablo Carreño Busta in four sets in the 2017 US Open semi-finals but lost to another Spaniard, the resurgent Rafael Nadal, in the final, going down 3–6, 3–6, 4–6.

At Wimbledon 2017, Querrey reached his first Grand Slam semi-final in 42 attempts – the longest wait for a semi-final by any player in the open era. Italy's Flavia Pennetta made the 2013 US Open semi-finals in her 41st Slam.
