The first retractable proto-lightsaber was created by Hacksmith Industries (Canada), in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, on 8 September 2020.
James Hobson (Canada), a keen inventor who goes by the name 'the Hacksmith', worked with lead designer Bogdan Malynovskyy (also Canada) on the protosaber project.
