Barrel jumping is a popular sport in North America. Contestants circle around an ice rink to gain speed, before jumping a row of barrels laid down side to side. Jumping on skates is thought to have originated a couple of centuries ago in Holland, where skates were a mode of transport over lakes. Barrel jumping as a sport, was organized by Irving Jaffee, three-time Olympic Speed Skating Gold Medal winner for the USA. The initial World's Championship was held in New York, USA in 1951. Other barrel jumping events then followed.
