According to the World Bank figures of 2011, Sierra Leone is the most dangerous country in which to be born. The infant mortality rate is 119 deaths for every 1,000 live births. This is an improvement on 10 years previously when, in 2001, 143 babies in every 1,000 live births died.
This is fewer deaths than the previous record, which identified an infant mortality rate of 157 deaths for every 1,000 live births in Afghanistan (according to The Economist Pocket World in Figures 2010).
