The first Antarctic crossing from Berkner Island to Ross Island (via the South Pole) was achieved by brothers Sjur and Simen Mørdre (both Norway) in 1990-91. Using a combination of dog sleds (from Berkner Island to the South Pole) and kite-skis (from the South Pole to Ross Island), they covered a distance of 2,845 km (1,768 mi) in 91 days.

They had started on 22 October 1990 from Berkner Island and had been resupplied three times en route, arriving at the South Pole on 14 December 1990, before continuing on to Ross Island.

In 1992, the brothers went to the North Pole and became the first to reach both poles on skis.

This record was verified by the Polar Expeditions Classification Scheme (PECS).
