The worlds largest operational telephone was exhibited at a festival on 16 Sep 1988 to celebrate the 80th birthday of Centraal Beheer, an insurance company based in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. It was 2.47m 8ft 1in high and 6.06m 19ft 11in long, and weighed 3.5tonnes. The handset, being 7.14m 23ft 5in long, had to be lifted by crane in order to make a call.

The world’s largest working telephone was created in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. This inspired by Centraal Beheer’s famous Dutch slogan “Even Apeldoorn bellen” - literally “Just call Apeldoorn.”

The slogan, well-known for representing direct and personal human contact served as the inspiration for this playful record.
The telephone was built by the company’s own employees to celebrate its 80th anniversary, the enormous telephone still stands outside the company’s office in Apeldoorn. It serves as a striking symbol of connection and communication and a reminder that sometimes, the simplest gesture, picking up the phone can make a big difference.
