A record height of 9,740 m (31,955 ft) was attained by a train of eight kites over Lindenberg, Germany, on 1 August 1919, flown by the Prussian Meteorological Institute (Germany). This record was recognized by Kite Lines magazine.
The design was a modified version of the Hargrave box kite. The first kite in the train had a surface of 10 m², the second 5 m² and the other six kites were 8 m². The flying line was some 15 km (9.3 mi) long and made with thick piano wire.
The undisputed highest altitude by a single kite is 4,879.54 m (16,009 ft) and was achieved by Robert Moore (Australia) in Cobar, New South Wales, Australia on 23 September 2014.
