The oldest fossil plant known is the 428 million years old Cooksonia, from the Silurian period, found in Ireland.
Cooksonias were simply 6,5 cm long stems with spore on the tips. Since when plants invaded the land there was no soil as we know it, these plants' roots probably were horizontal growing stems connected with the soil by root hairs.
