The youngest star to attain Disney Legend status is singer/songwriter/actress Miley Cyrus (USA, b. Destiny Cyrus, 23 November 1992), who collected the award during a ceremony in Anaheim, California (the home of Disneyland), on 11 August 2024 when she was 31 years 262 days old.
Cyrus shot to fame at the age of 13, playing secretive pop star Hannah Montana – the alter ego of Miley Stewart – in the Disney Channel TV series of the same name between 2006 and 2011. After honing her skills as a singer on the show, which included performing the opening theme song “The Best of Both Worlds”, Cyrus has gone on to have a chart-topping music career, releasing eight studio albums (2007-23) and a string of hit singles such as “7 Things”, “Party in the U.S.A.”, “We Can’t Stop”, “Wrecking Ball” and “Flowers” – the latter scooping Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
The Disney Legends 2024 inductees – announced on 19 March 2024 – also included Angela Bassett, James Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis, Harrison Ford and composer John Williams.
The Walt Disney Company inaugurated its Disney Legends award in 1987, naming US actor Fred MacMurray (1908-91) as the first recipient. The accolade has been presented regularly since then, with Julie Andrews (1991), Angela Lansbury (1995), Dick Van Dyke (1998), Phil Collins (2002), Elton John (2006), Robin Williams (2009), Jim Henson (2011), Steve Jobs (2013), George Lucas (2015), Stan Lee (2017), Hans Zimmer (2019) and Idina Menzel (2022) among the 300+ Legends honoured.
