Taylor Swift (USA) took home an unprecedented fifth Video of the Year award – and third consecutive – at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on 11 September 2024. Swift collected the VMAs’ most prestigious gong for “Fortnight” (featuring Post Malone), having previously won it for “Anti-Hero” (2023), “All Too Well: The Short Film” (2022), “You Need to Calm Down” (2019) and “Bad Blood” (featuring Kendrick Lamar, 2015).
Swift has three more wins in the category – first presented in 1984 – than Eminem, Missy Elliott, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Lamar. She also scored nominations for “I Knew You Were Trouble.” (2013) and “The Man” (2020).
Swift’s seven Video of the Year nominations have been matched or bettered only by Beyoncé (7) and Eminem (9), with the rapper extending his record in 2024 with “Houdini”. One of Beyoncé’s nods was with The Carters.
Video of the Year’s first winner was “You Might Think” by The Cars. Other recipients have included Dire Straits (“Money for Nothing”), Peter Gabriel (“Sledgehammer”), Sinéad O’Connor (“Nothing Compares 2 U”), R.E.M. (“Losing My Religion”), Madonna (“Ray of Light”), Britney Spears (“Piece of Me”), Miley Cyrus (“Wrecking Ball”), The Weeknd (“Blinding Lights”) and Lil Nas X (“Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”).
