First non-English-language film to win a Golden Globe award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez (France, 2024) won Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards on 5 January 2025. The Spanish-language film stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoë Saldaña, Adriana Paz and Selena Gomez. On 9 December 2024, Gascón had become the Golden Globes’ first-ever transgender woman to be nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, for her roles as Mexican cartel boss Juan “Manitas” Del Monte and – after gender-affirming surgery – the film’s titular character.

Emilia Pérez secured 10 nominations – the most by a musical or comedy in Golden Globes history – and won four awards on the night: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Supporting Actress (Saldaña, as Rita Mora Castro) and Best Original Song (“El Mal”) in addition to Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
