The largest species of octopus is the Pacific giant octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) native to coastal areas of the North Pacific including off western USA, Canada, Russia, Japan, China and the Korean Peninsula. The biggest specimen reported anecdotally sported a tentacle span of up to 32 feet (9.75 metres), and an estimated weight of 600 pounds (272 kilograms). The largest specimen based upon direct measurements of it weighed alive also belonged to this species; it measured almost 4 metres (13 feet 1 inch) in total length and weighed 71 kilograms (156 pounds).
