The Amazon rainforest spans nine South American countries and covers between around 6.24 million square km and 6.56 million square km (2.4 million–2.53 million sq mi), depending upon the exact definition. The rainforest represents more than 80% of the Amazon biome, which itself covers between 6.7 and 6.9 million square km (2.58–2.66 million sq mi) and includes the whole of the Amazon River Basin.

Around two thirds of the rainforest is in Brazil.
