The largest ever land-locked swimming pool was the Fleishhacker Pool on Sloat Boulevard, near Great Highway, San Francisco, California, USA, which had an area of 1.39 ha (3.4 acres). It measured 304.8 m (1,000 ft) long, 45.7 m (150 ft) wide, up to 4.26 m (14 ft) deep, contained 22,712,470 litres (6,000,000 US gal) of seawater (pumped from the ocean at high tide) and could accommodate 10,000 swimmers. It was opened on 23 April 1925 but has been abandoned since 1971. Lifeguards used kayaks to get across the pool. There was also a 15 x 15-m (50 x 50 ft),4.8-m (16-ft) deep diving pool with a tiered diving platform.
