McMurdo Station is America’s permanent research station on the southern tip of Ross Island. It was first established in 1956 and has since grown to be Antarctica’s largest permanently inhabited place. In winter its population is less than 200 but this grows to around 1,000 during the summer. Its inhabitants are scientists and support personnel. The station contains three airfields, a harbour and more than 100 buildings, as well as a 9-hole golf course.
